Texas Women’s Swimming Takes Down Another Pac-12 Rival, Tops California

BERKELEY – The University of Texas women’s swimming and diving team picked up its second win over a Pac-12 school in as many nights, taking down the University of California by a score of 161-139 Friday afternoon in Berkeley.

After beating Stanford in a come-from-behind victory last night, the Longhorns continued their hot streak tonight by winning 10 of the 16 events. Kelsey Leneave, Brynne Wong and Emma Ivory-Ganja led the way for Texas, each winning two individual events.

Leneave just out-touched Cal’s Celina Li to win the 200 fly, 1:59.02 to 1:59.19, before winning the 500 free over teammate Kaitlin Pawlowicz later on in 4:50.98. Pawlowicz also won the opening 1000 free in 9:50.26. Wong earned wins in the 50 free (23.19) and 100 fly (54.08); in the 100 fly, she out-touched Cal’s Noemie Thomas by one one-hundredth of a second. Ivory-Ganja ruled the diving well, scoring 302.63 to win the 1-meter and 338.85 to place first in the 3-meter.

Bethany Leap (100 breast, 1:02.73) and Madisyn Cox (200 breast, 2:14.32) also won individual events for the Longhorns.

Cal put up a great fight, with Missy Franklin and Elizabeth Pelton both winning multiple individual events at the meet. Franklin picked up a one-second win in the 200 free (1:47.37) before winning the 100 free later on in 50.13. Pelton took care of the backstroke events, winning the 100 in 53.79 and the 200 in 1:54.33 before closing out the meet with a 1:58.69 in the 200 IM.

Pelton and Franklin were both part of Cal’s winning 400 medley relay, as they joined Marina Garcia and Farida Osman to post a 3:40.96. Texas’ Gretchen Jaques, Brynne Wong, Emily Rose Williams and Rebecca Millard won the final 200 free relay in 1:32.29.
