Texas v. Arizona

TUCSON, Arizona, February 2. THE No. 2 Arizona men's swimming and diving team knocked off the No. 1 Texas Longhorns swim team at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center. The score of the meet was 200.50-152.50. This was Arizona's first victory over Texas in a dual meet. When the rankings come out in two weeks, Arizona will be the top team in the nation. "We had a lot of fun and a lot of close races," said Arizona head coach Frank Busch, "Texas is a well coached team."

Starting off the day in the 200 yard medley relay for Arizona was their relay team of Albert Subirats, Marcus Titus, Darian Townsend and Jordan Smith. Their time of 1:28.05 was fast enough for a first place finish. "We take pride in the relays. You go to the NCAA's and its double points. We planted the seed many years ago to do well in relays, so we take pride in them," said coach Busch.

The Longhorns Michael Klueh finished in first place in the 1650 free with a time of 15:12.08. Finishing in second was Arizona's Matt Biel (15:29.74).

In the 200 yard freestyle Texas took the top two spots. Finishing in first was David Walters (1:37.00) and finishing in second was Matthew McGinnis (1:37.09). UA's Darian Townsend finished in third place with a time of 1:37.24.

Subirats continues to swim extremely well. His time of 47.16 in the 100 yard backstroke was fast enough for a first place finish. He also came in first place in the 50 yard free (20.28).

In the 100 yard breaststroke, Arizona's Josh Arreguin came in first place (55.06). Matthew Lowe of Texas finished in second (55.84) while Marcus Titus came in third (56.30).

In the 200 yard IM, Townsend's time of 1:48.61 was fast enough for first place. Jack Brown finished in second (1:50.72).

The Wildcats continue to excel at the relays. In the last event of the day in the 400 yard free relay, the team of Subirats, Nilo, Smith and Townsend came in first place with a time of 2:55.32.
