Texas Men, Stanford Women Lead After Day Two of Texas Invitational

AUSTIN, Texas, Dec. 2. THE No.1 University of Texas men's swimming and diving team extended its lead to 543 points in the second day of the Texas Invitational, held at the Jamail Swim Center. Trailing the Longhorns are No. 7 California (201), No. 5 Arizona (365), No. 25 Wisconsin (309), No. 22 Harvard (301), No. 9 Michigan (221), No. 19 SMU (190), No. 12 Arizona State (143), Nebraska (109), TCU (99), No. 3 Stanford (74) and Kansas (21).

On the women's side, the Longhorns (354.50) moved into second behind Stanford, which holds a slim lead of 370.50 points, followed by No. 2 UCLA (349.50), No. 3 Arizona (344.50), No. 12 Wisconsin (280.50), No. 5
California (279), No. 13 Michigan (217), No. 15 SMU (211), Rice (102), No.16 Arizona State (99.50), No. 18 Minnesota (87), TCU (57), Nebraska (34) and Harvard (2).

Senior Nate Dusing (Villa Hills, Ky.) led the Longhorns capturing the backstroke event (47.87), followed by teammate junior Tommy Hannan (Baltimore, Md.), who placed second with a time of 47.91. Dusing also helped the team of Hannan, freshman Brendan Hansen (Havertown, Pa,) andjunior Leffie Crawford (Pacifica, Calif.) to a first-place showing in the
200 medley relay and capture the 800 freestyle relay title with sophomore Chris Kemp (Southlake, Texas) and seniors Jamie Rauch (Houston,Texas) and Scott Goldblatt (Scotch Plains, N.J.) ( 6:30.55).

"We are keeping the momentum going and working hard," said men's head coach Eddie Reese. "I have watched these swimmers make significant breakthroughs in their times during practice. Now they are making these times in competition and have allowed us to post great performances."

Arizona's Tyler Painter scored an impressive win in the 400 IM, clocking 3:48.02, more than four seconds ahead of Texas' Joey Montague.

Arizona State's Scott Von Schoff took the 200 free in 1:36.75, while Cal's Daniel Kim swam 55.14 to win the 100 breast.

Cal freshman Natalie Coughlin swam to two victories. She took the 200 free in 1:45.65, just barely enough to edge Arizona's Sarah Tolar (1:45.77), then came back to beat Arizona's 1996 Olympic champion, Beth Botsford, in the 100 back, 52.79 to 53.50.

Tolar scored a big win when she out-touched Stanford's Olympic hero, Misty Hyman, in the 400 IM, 4:13.12 to
4:13.29.

Stanford frosh Tara Kirk clocked 1:00.92 to win the 100 breast.

Texas won the 800 free relay in 7:16.84, an NCAA consideration time.

Sophomore Kristen Marquis (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) was Texas' top diver of the day, capturing the three-meter springboard event (518.75).

"We are swimming really tough right now," said co-head women's coach Mike Walker. "They are notching great times, but what is even more impressive is how this team has come together. They want to win and are focused on that goal, but they also see the importance of supporting each other."

"This has been an amazing meet," said Lanne. "As a team we have really come together and I couldn't be any prouder. I have never felt so much enthusiasm or excitement on this team. We are not going to back down and will keep fighting for first place. We are developing into something even bigger and that is exciting."

The Texas Invitational will conclude on Sunday with the preliminaries beginning at 9:30 a.m. and finals slated for 3 p.m.
