Texas A&M vs. Louisiana State

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana, January 21. THE Texas A&M men's and women's swimming and diving teams pulled out a pair of road victories when they defeated LSU Saturday in Baton Rouge, La. The men's side took down the Tigers 167.5-132.5 with a total of nine individual wins and two relay wins on the day.

The meet kicked off well for the guys, as they took first in the 200-yard medley relay. The relay squad of seniors John Ariens, Amini Fonua and Boris Loncaris as well as sophomore Kyle Troskot touched in 1:29.05. The Aggies also took first in the 200-yard freestyle relay, as juniors John Dalton and Austin Wilson, Loncaric and Troskot finished with a time of 1:21.14.

"Our guys started well," said A&M Head Coach Jay Holmes. "We wanted to set the tone for the meet by going out and getting a win, and we did just that in the 200 medley."

The Aggies' next win came in the 200-yard freestyle event, in which Dalton showed a dramatic comeback in the last 10 yards of the race to finish first with a time of 1:39.10. Dalton also notched another individual win in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 44.70.

"The 200 free was a good moment for us in the meet," Holmes said. "LSU was winning the entire race, and for John to come back in the last 10 meters was a big momentum boost."

Loncaric also took a pair of individual wins in the 200-yard butterfly (1:47.75) and the 100-yard butterfly (48.07).

Other Aggies grabbing wins in the lanes were Ariens in the 100-yard backstroke (49.45), Fonua in the 100-yard breaststroke (54.81) and sophomore Paul-Marc Schweitzer in the 400-yard individual medley (4:00.00).

The diving well was busy with action with both men and women competing, and senior Grant Nel was right in the middle of it.

Nel took first place in both the 1-meter (410.05) and the 3-meter (416.25) springboard events, while junior Hayden Jones followed in second place on the 1-meter with a score of 358.15.

"The diving boards were a big boost for us," Holmes said. "With Grant and Hayden on the 1-meter- that's a duo that most people won't be able to compete with."

On the women's side, the Aggies won 181-115 as they duplicated the men's win totals on the day with nine individual first places touches and two relay wins.

The women's also kicked the meet off with a relay win as the combined efforts of junior Tess Simpson, and sophomores Breeja Larson, Paige Miller and Kim Pavlin took first in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:40.12.

Larson continued her dominance in the breaststroke events as she took first in both the 100-yard (1:00.45) and 200-yard (2:09.71) races.

Junior Liz Nelson took a pair of wins as well in the distance freestyle events. Her times in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:58.23) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:52.65) were good enough for firsts in both events.

Pavlin was the third Aggie to grab a pair of individual events on the day, as she grabbed top finishes in the 200-yard backstroke and the 200-yard individual medley.

Sophomore Paige Miller rounded out the individual wins in the lanes with a first place in the 100-yard backstroke (54.69).

In the final event of the day, as freshmen Sammie Bosma and Kelli Benjamin, sophomore Kristina Kontrimas and junior Christine Regone closed out the 400-yard freestyle with a time of 3:23.24.

On the diving boards, the Aggies duo of seniors, Jaele Patrick and Janie Potvin, grabbed 1-2 finishes on both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events. Patrick finished with a score of 332.35 on the 1-meter and a 369.50 on the 3-meter while Potvin scored a 309.20 on the 1-meter and a 358.85 on the 3-meter.
