NEW COMMIT: Just days after Erica Sullivan made her college decision, another one of the top distance swimmers in the Class of 2018 has made her verbal commitment known. Texan Gabby Kopenski has decided to stay in state, giving her verbal commitment to the Aggies.

The Prosper High School rising senior skipped this high school season, but she is a four time individual state champion in her first two years at the Texas 5A level. Her freshman year she became the 500 freestyle high school state record holder.

Kopenski, who swims for Texas Ford Aquatics, gets better with distance in the freestyle events, and also brings a strong 400 IM along with her. Her best SCY times are:

  • 200 Free 1:46.80
  • 500 Free 4:37.94
  • 1000 Free 9:35.79
  • 1650 Free 15:56.39
  • 400 IM 4:09.92

Kopenski will make an immediate impact at Texas A&M. At the 2017 meet, she would have been the SEC Champion in the 500 freestyle and the mile with her best times. She would have also be a 400 IM B finalist and a 200 freestyle A finalist.

Texas A&M won the 800 freestyle relay at this season’s conference championship. With her best time, Kopenski was just a few tenths off a spot on the team’s relay. She’ll overlap for a year with the relay’s sophomores- Sydney Pickrem and Claire Rasmus, and two years with its freshman Katie Portz.

On the National level, Kopenski would have finished tenth in the mile this year and seventh in the 500 freestyle. The Aggies did not have any point scorers in either of those events.
