Texas 5A High School State Championships

AUSTIN, Texas, March 17. SIX-star recruit Matt Thompson (Jesuit) highlighted the Texas 5A State Championships by setting an independent national record in the 200 IM (1:45.27). The overall standard (1:45.25) is held by Kyle Whitaker of Chesterton High School (Indiana). Thompson, who will be attending Stanford University in the fall, also won the 100 backstroke with a time of 47.37.

Girls Results
Conroe The Woodlands won the meet with 238 points, followed by San Antonio Churchill (202) and Humble Kingwood (167).

Jillian Vitarius, Merritt Krawczyk, Dannye Osburn, and Jamie Friderichs set a meet record with a time of 1:43.25 in the 200 medley relay. Vitarius and Krawczyk had individual wins in the 100 backstroke (54.70) and 100 breaststroke (1:02.26) respectively.

Junior Samantha Tucker (Austin Westlake) had dual individual wins in the 200 (1:44.64) and 100 freestyles. Her 100 freestyle time of 48.53 was nearly .20 seconds off Dagny Knutson’s (Minot H.S., ND) national record.

Kaylea Arnett (Spring) and Loren Figueroa (Humble Kingwood) went head-to-head in the diving competition. Arnett came out on top with a score of 456.75, followed closely by Figueroa (456.30) and Reagan’s Samantha Holland (437.20).

Erin Foster (Conroe Woodlands) touched out senior Maureen McLaine (Plano West) in the 500 freestyle by only .35 seconds for a first-place finish (4:48.56). She joined Kelsey Amundsen, Chelsey Eberwein, and Mary Foster to win the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:33.54.

Katie Scarsella, Camille Hendrix, Ruthie Norbal, and Tucker combined for a win in the 400 freestyle relay (3:23.72).

Boys Results
Humble Kingwood took first on the boys’ side (200), while Plano and Round Rock placed second (170) and third (154) respectively.

Round Rock’s Wesley Wheeler, Brendon Leach, Dax Hill, and Kerrington Hill won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:34.06. Hill also won the 100 breaststroke (54.84).

Pearland’s Samual Decker secured first-place in the diving competition with a score of 511.15. Hudson Rains (Houston Cypress Fairbank) placed second (466.10) and Alex Fincher (Keller) took third (446.65).

Paul Leonhardt, Kevin Yang, Seth Russell, and Seth Stubblefield teamed up for a win in the 200 freestyle relay (1:23.26). Leonhardt also won the 100 butterfly (48.38).

Jason Wan joined Leonhardt, Stubblefield, and Russell to close the meet with a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay (3:04.55).
