Texas 4A High School State Championships

AUSTIN, Texas, March 17. AT the Texas State 4A Championships, Cole Cragin (Friendswood) set an overall national record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 46.75. The previous public school record (47.50) was set in 1994 by Derya Buyukuncu of Woodbridge High in California. Cragin’s time was also faster than Alex Lim’s (Bolles School/Florida) 1999 independent standard by .07 seconds. Cragin, who has signed to the University of Texas for the 2009-10 season, also won the 100 butterfly (48.46).

Girls Results
Dallas Highland Park scored 270 points to win the girl’s state title at the Texas 4A State Championships. Montgomery and Magnolia followed with scores of 185 and 170 respectively.

Tanner Harris, Allison Arnold, Hannah Ferrin, and Katie Streepey of Dallas Highland Park set a meet record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:48.68. Arnold also set meet records in the 200 (1:47.65) and 500 (4:46.28) freestyles.

Senior Caroline McElhany set meet records in the 200 IM (2:02.19) and the 100 butterfly (54.70).

Richmond Foster’s Valerie Snider, Hope Braverman, Jordan Teague, and Skylar Smith combined for a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay (1:38.38). Smith also won the 50 (23.17) and 100 (50.91) freestyles.

Sophomore Michelle Cabassol (Montgomery) diving score of 443.30 surpassed teammate Ashley Bourland’s 2003 diving record. Kara McCormack (Austin Johnson) and Lindsey Streepey (Dallas Highland Park) followed with scores of 434.85 and 410.15 respectively.

Ferrin, Delaney Rolfe, Bolton Harris, and Arnold teamed up for a win in the 400 freestyle relay (3:32.18).

Boys Results
Humble Kingwood Park won the boy’s state title (229), while Frisco took second (229) and Boerne Champion finished third (161).

Frisco’s Barrett Mark, Jared Nix, Dean Stromme, and Andrew North set a meet record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:35.82. Mark and Nix had individual wins in the 200 IM (1:53.36) and the 100 breaststroke (58.27) respectively.

Caleb Veazey (Adams) won the 200 (1:40.43) and 500 (4:28.67) freestyles, while Forrest Hughes (Freeport Brazosport) won the 50 (20.58) and 100 (45.88) freestyles.

Paul Bove, Cody Lickteig, Robert Fitzgerald, and Andrew Nelson of Boerne Champion combined for a meet record in the 200 freestyle relay (1:26.95).

Jake Kinzbach of Montgomery (497.55), Aidan Scribbick of San Antonio Alamo Heights (410.15), and Michael Birch of Dallas Highland Park (378.60) were the top three finishers in the diving competition.

Humble Kingwood Park closed the meet with a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay (3:09.49). Brooks Powell, Mark Dix, Barrett Johannsen, and Joseph Stanton contributed to the win.
