Teuscher takes 400 Free

Two years ago, Columbia’s Cristina Teuscher became the first Ivy League woman to win an NCAA swimming title when she took the
500 yard free. She passed on the event last year, but this year came back to reclaim her crown. And reclaim it she did. Jumping out to a lead on the first lap, she gradually lengthened it at each turn, splitting 58.97 for 100 meters and 2:00.04 at the halfway mark. Touching at 3:01.94 at 300 meters, she was eyeing the American mark of 4::02.59 set 22 years ago by Sippy Woodhead. She finished in a strong 4:04.09, the world’s second fastest time this year. A fast closing Jessica Foschi (Stanford) was second in 4:06.17, followed by Virginia frosh Cara Lane (4:07.31).
