Tennessee Stumps South Carolina to Go 3-0 in the SEC

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee October 28. THE Tennessee men's swimming and diving team moved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the SEC after a 125.50-108.50 win over South Carolina Friday afternoon at the Student Aquatic Center.

"We had some nice performances today," UT head coach John Trembley said. "There are some signs of life peaking through from some of our younger swimmers with which we are very pleased."

Senior Tyler Gustafson led the way for the Aqua Vols with two individual wins. Gustafson won the 50 free in 20.87. Junior Andrew Engle finished second in 21.63 and sophomore Andrew Van Meter tied for third in 21.68 with Reid Duff of South Carolina. Gustafson also won the 100 free in 45.11. Fellow senior Bryan Golgdber finished third in 47.47.

"I was pretty happy with my performances today with the amount of training we are doing," Gustafson said. "We are excited for next week against Alabama. It will be our biggest test so far and we are hungry and well prepared for it."

Leading the way for USC on the afternoon on the men's side was sophomore Dan White, who won both the 1000 yard freestyle and 400 yard freestyle. Tennessee Freshman Barry Murphy won the 100-yard I.M. in 52.44 over teammate Casey Dauw. Dauw finished second in 53.94.

"Barry Murphy's individual medley was a very nice swim as well as Tyler Gustafson's two wins in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events," Trembley added.

Vol Sophomore All-America Octavio Alesi won the 150-yard butterfly in 1:18.91, almost six seconds faster than second place. Vol sophomore Michael Wolfe followed Alesi's huge win with one of his own. Wolfe won the 150-yard backstroke in 1:18.55 with second place nearly six seconds behind.

"We weren't too sharp this afternoon vs. Tennessee," said USC head swimming coach Don Gibb. “Our guys raced better than they have in the last couple weeks. Dan White and Colby Mack competed well and we won the 200 freestyle relay. We still have to perform better."

Carolina started off sharp early with a strong start in the 1,000 freestyle. Dan White won the first of two events with a time of 9:30.60 with Tim Farrington finishing third and Kevin Cargill taking fourth place. White, Kyle Cormier and Tim Farrington would also take the top three spots in the 400 freestyle.

White won the event with a time of 3:40.46. Junior swimmer Colby Mack would then take first place in the 150 yard freestyle with a time of 1:13.55. South Carolina’s 200 freestyle relay closed out the meet with a top finish of 1:25.61.
