Tennessee Invite, Day Three

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee, November 18. JUNIOR Maureen McLaine broke two Big 12 distance records while leading the No. 10 ranked Texas A&M women's swimming and diving team as they finished off the three-day Tennessee Volunteer Invitational with a win.
The Aggies scored a total of 1,173.5 points, good enough for first place in front of Tennessee (691), Louisville (594.5), Arkansas (580.5), LSU (517.5), Kentucky (331), and Southern Illinois (45).

McLaine shocked and awed when she took two records in one race, the 1,650. McLaine came through the 1,000 in 9:38.95 and finished with a first place, record-breaking time of 15:56.15.

McLaine led the way for the Aggies, who had five individual wins and a total of 14 NCAA "B" cut swims in day three of the invite.

The Aggies flexed their backstroke muscles in the 200-yard backstroke event as they snagged the top four spots in the race. Sophomore swimmer Kim Pavlin grabbed the No. 1 spot in the race with a time of 1:55.43, followed by senior Tess Simpson (1:55.62), senior Megan Latone (1:56.07) and sophomore Wylie Escobedo (1:58.34).

Senior Anna Heller pulled out a ninth place finish (1:56.89), first place in the consolation final, to complete the Aggie beat down in the event, in which all A&M swimmers posted NCAA "B" cuts.

Sophomore Breeja Larson posted another NCAA "A" cut in the 200-yard breaststroke with a top time of 2:07.06. Sophomore Cammile Adams took an individual win in the 200-yard butterfly with yet another NCAA "B" cut time of 1:55.21.

On the diving boards, senior Janie Potvin took the top spot in the women's platform event with a NCAA zone qualifying score of 322.20.

The Aggies also had NCAA "B" cut times from sophomore Ashley Adams in the 1,650-yard freestyle (16:12.25), redshirt sophomore Caroline McElhany (49.92) and freshman Kelli Benjamin (50.07) in the 100-yard freestyle, senior Erica Dittmer in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:14.90), senior Rita Medrano (1:55.67) and McElhany (1:56.44) in the 200-yard butterfly.

A&M finished the meet with a second place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay with an NCAA "B" cut time of 3:20.79. The relay squad consisted of Benjamin, Escobedo, McElhany and Dittmer.

The Aggies have a couple weeks of rest before they hit the pool again on Dec. 3 in a dual meet against Rice in College Station.
