GENEVA, Ohio, August 13. TEAM Illinois put together 4,548.83 points to claim the team title at the Central Zone Long Course Championships held at the SPIRE Institute Aug. 2-4. Team Michigan claimed second with 3,784 points, followed by Team Ohio (3,480.67) and Team Indiana (3,338.5). Lake Erie was fifth with 1,860 points.
Illinois’ Kendra Joachim and Michigan’s Kylie Goit tied for first in the 10-and-under girls age group. Indiana’s Aiden Tierney was the top 10-and-under boy. Also earning high-point top honors were Carla Gildersleeve, Indiana and Jake Foster, Ohio (11-12); and Azra Avdic, Illinois and Gary Kostbade, Indiana (13-14).
Michigan’s Riley Kishman earned a junior national cut as well as the Central Zone record in the 13-14 girls 100 meter breast (1:12.73). Michael Brinegar, swimming for Indiana, took down zone marks in the 13-14 boys distance free events: 400 free, 4:11.37; 800 free, 8:37.21; 1500 free, 16:29.03. Indiana’s Jacob Destrampe set zone records in both the 11-12 boys 100 free (56.66) and 400 free (4:20.13); teammate Jota Iwase lowered the mark in the 11-12 boys 200 fly to 2:15.29. Camden Murphy of Michigan set the new 13-14 boys 100 fly mark to 57.86.
Laura Westphal, Lexus VanHoren, Kishman and Gabrielle Higgins of Team Michigan combined for a record-setting 4:01.83 in the 13-14 girls 400 free relay; Ohio’s quartet of Olivia Chick, Hannah Foster, Lauren Sullivan and Ashley Volpenheim were just 1-hundredth behind. Team Illinois’ 10-and-under girls squad of Anita Prybell, Suzana Sharaxhija, Kendra Joahim and Tiffanie Ruan cruised to a 2:02.13 in the 200 free relay.
Team Ohio’s 11-12 boys team set two relay marks. Isaac Grinberg, Tyler Babinec, Carson Foster and Nate Stadler went 1:46.96 in the 200 free; Jake Foster and Ben Neff joined Carson Foster and Stadler for a 4:25.40 in the 400 medley. Spencer Carl, Ryan Geheb, Murphy and Rudy Aguilar gave Team Michigan a relay record with their 4:06.83 in the 13-14 boys 400 medley.
