Tampa Swimming and Diving Teams Extend Leads at NSU Shark Invitational

FORT LAUDERDALE – Meet records fell in eight of the 10 events contested Friday night during the second night of finals at the NSU Shark Invitational, as the University of Tampa stretched its leads in both the men’s and women’s team standings heading into day three.

The Nova Southeastern University swimming and diving teams closed day two of the Shark Invitational, swimming 11 NCAA provisional times, one NCAA qualifying time and breaking five Shark Invitational records.

The night started with the women’s 200-yard freestyle relay, where the NSU women’s A-team swam a NCAA provisional time of 1:33.31 in the A-final, breaking the Shark Invitational record. The women’s A-team, consisting of Bryndis Hansen (So., Akureyri, Iceland), Jordan Shows (Fr., Alta Loma, Calif.), Emma Wahlstrom (So., Stockholm, Sweden) and Emma Lawrenz (Sr., Mennetonka, Minn.) was followed by the NSU men’s A-team, who swam a NCAA provisional time of 1:20.93, good enough for a third-place finish in the men’s A-final. The men’s A-team, consisting of Thiago Sickert (So., Vila Velha, Brazil), Michael Ragan (So., Dacula Ga.) and Magnus Lundgren (Sr., Stockholm, Sweden), welcomed their newest teammate, Anton Lobanov (Fr., Novosibirisk, Russia), who swam the first leg of the event.

Malin Westman (Fr., Harryda, Sweden) followed the relays with a NCAA provisional time of 4:29.62 in the women’s 400-yard individual medley A-final, good enough for a second-place finish. Marco Aldabe (So., Alicante, Spain) turned the next event into a family affair, breaking his older brother’s Shark Invitational record in the men’s 400-yard individual medley with a NCAA provisional time of 3:55.99.

Adding to the record-breaking party, Hansen would register a Shark Invitational record of her own in the women’s 100-yard butterfly, swimming a NCAA provisional time of 54.83. Lawrenz trailed her with a NCAA provisional time of 56.21, good enough for a second-place finish. Sickert would soon follow with a Shark Invitational record of his own with a NCAA qualifying time of 47.71 in the men’s 100-yard butterfly. His time currently ranks third in NCAA Division II.

In the women’s 200-yard freestyle A-final, Wahlstrom swam to a third-place finish with a NCAA provisional time of 1:51.38. Sickert and Shane Kleinbeck (Sr., San Antonio, Texas) would follow with NCAA provisional times of 1:39.60 and 1:41.04, respectively, in the men’s 200-yard freestyle A-final.

The final two events of the night started with a Shark Invitational record from the NSU women’s A-team, consisting of Wahlstrom, Westman, Lawrenz and Hansen in the 400-yard medley relay A-final. Their NCAA provisional time of 3:45.51 broke the previous record by over five seconds. Closing the night was the men’s 400-yard medley relay A-team, consisting of Aldabe, Lobanov, Sickert and Lundgren. Their NCAA provisional time of 3:16.48 was good enough for a second-place finish.

Both the men’s and women’s team moved from third to second place after day two’s finals. The men currently have 766 points, while the women have 681 points.

The meet will resume Saturday morning at 10 a.m. for the day three prelims.
