Tae Hwan Park Headed To Australia For Two-Month Training Camp

BRISBANE, Australia, January 6. KOREA’s Tae Hwan Park is headed back to Australia to start training for the 2014 Asian Games. This is part of an eight-week training camp under the direction of Michael Bohl according to Arirang News.

Park returned from his post-2012 London Olympic sabbatical this past October when he competed at the 94th National Sports Festival in Incheon, South Korea. The four-time Olympic medalist, who took gold in the 400-meter freestyle event at the 2008 Beijing Games, put up a top-10 time in the world in the 400 free with a 3:46.71 in Incheon.

Park is looking to improve upon his double silver performance at the 2012 London Olympics, where he took runner-up in the 200 and 400 freestyle events. He nearly missed out on the 400-meter medal after initially being disqualified for a false start. The DQ was later overturned on an appeal from the South Korean Federation.

Before China’s Sun Yang came along to revolutionize distance freestyle and become the first Asian to win Swimming World’s World Swimmer of the Year award this year, Park had been the top male distance swimmer in Asia. He’s looking to return to that status in the coming years with Sun still battling his own swimming federation due to questions regarding his behavior.
