Syracuse Sweeps Colgate in Season Opener

HAMILTON, New York, October 12. THE swimming and diving team opened its 2007 season with a sweep at Colgate on Friday. The Orange was impressive in every event against the Raiders. The men won 13 events en route to a 160-61 win, while the women won 11 for a 129-94 victory.

For the men, sophomore Ryan Corcoran, sophomore Boldizsar Kiss, freshman Kuba Kotynia and junior Alex Taraskin each won two events. Corcoran won the 50 free (22.26) and the 100 free (48.82). Kiss finished first in the 200 free (1:46.66) and the 200 fly (1:57.05). Kotynia earned victories in the 200 IM (1:57.84) and the 200 Breast (2:08.16). Taraskin placed first in the 1000 free (9:59.46) and the 500 free (4:50.43). Along with Kotynia, freshman Berk Kahraman earned his first career victory – he was first in the 200 back (2:07.69).

The women got a strong performance from newcomer Natalie Mazzetta. The freshman earned victories in the 200 free (1:53.35), the 200 fly (2:05.40) and the 500 free (5:02.01). Other first timers, freshman Bridget Flora and freshman Katlin O'Hara also had success. Flora won the 1000 free (10:56.44) and O'Hara finished first in the 100 free (52.87). Junior Catrina Roth took home first in the 200 back (2:07.69) and sophomore Masha Glukhova won the 200 breast (2:24.28).

In relay action, both the men and women were victorious in the 400 medley and the 400 free relays. The men's times in the events were 3:32.93 and 3:15.71. The women posted times of 3:59.24 and 3:33.96.

The Orange won every diving event. Freshman Corey Psoinos won both the one-meter and the three-meter dive for the men and sophomore Kirsten Thomas won both for the women.

SU will host the Orange Invitational on Friday, Oct 19th and on Saturday, Oct. 20th.
