Swiss Championships: Near National Records Mark Day One

GENEVA, Switzerland, April 3. THE first day of the Swiss Championships took place in Geneva, Switzerland with several national records almost falling.

The closest call came in the women's 400 free as national-record holder Flavia Rigamonti ripped off a time of 4:11.56 to win the event. That came up just short of her standard time of 4:11.54 set last summer.

The men had a pair of near-record performances. Damien Courtois, already the 100 fly record holder with a 54.44 from 2007 Worlds, won the 50 fly in 24.53. That came up just shy of Karel Novy's record of 24.30 set in 2005.

Meanwhile, Jonathan Massacand came within half-a-second of his 100 back national record of 55.24 set at the European Championships last month when he won the event here in 55.64.

In other action, Martin Hohl won the men's 400 free in 3:59.54, while Stephen Bachmann claimed the men's 200 breast in 2:18.56.

For the women, Marina Ribi won the 50 fly (28.13), Martina van Berkel won the 100 back (1:05.30) and Carmela Schlegel won the 200 breast (2:35.52).
