Swimsuit Regulations, US Open and Markus Rogan Highlight Today’s News on The Morning Swim Show

PHOENIX, Arizona, August 3. THE FINA world championships have finished, but the news still rolls on, as The Morning Swim Show brings you news from all over the world.

Host Peter Busch discusses the new FINA swimsuit regulations and how it will impact collegiate swimming in the United States. The U.S. Open begins tomorrow, and Busch lists some of the top swimmers looking to swim fast in Washington state. Also on the show is news on Markus Rogan's attack Sunday night in Italy. Watch the show in the video player below. The complete transcript of the show follows.

Last Tuesday the FINA Congress approved new legislation that will ban all the high-tech suits used in Rome effective January 1. Suits will no longer contain the polyurethane that was present in all the suits that have been popular since February 2008. Only textile material will be used, and FINA is working on a clear definition of what materials can be used. Men's suits can only go from the waist to the knees and women's suits from the shoulders to the knees.

Also, no suit will have any zippers or fasteners. All swimsuit manufacturers will have to submit their suits for approval by September to be on the list that will be published once the tests are complete.

If you're a collegiate swimmer, you will have to get into a textile suit much quicker. The NCAA is set to approve FINA's regulations on swimsuits and have the rules go into effect at the start of the collegiate season, which starts officially next month. The NCAA also voted to not erase the NCAA records that were set at the men's and women's championships last March in the high-tech suits.

Jessica Hardy is racing again after serving a yearlong suspension for testing positive at the Olympic Trials. Hardy showed up at the Junior Olympics meet in Mission Viejo Sunday to swim the 100 free, winning the race in 56.67. Hardy will be making her official return to competition at the US Open, which begins tomorrow in Federal Way, Washington. You can read about Jessica's story in her own words in this month's issue of Swimming World Magazine.

Speaking of the US Open, many of the American swimmers who just missed out on a spot on the world championship team will be there. Elaine Breeden, Jack Brown, Nick Brunelli, Jimmy Feigen, Margaret Hoelzer, Nick Thoman and Marcus Titus are just a couple of the top names who will be looking to swim faster than they did in Indianapolis.

And Kasey Carlson is on the psych sheet as well. You might remember that Carlson won the bronze medal at the world championships in the 100 breast and briefly held the American record in the 50 breast. We're not sure if Carlson was entered in the meet before she made the world team or not, so we'll all find out if she shows up for the 100 on Friday.

Also swimming at the meet will be Kate Ziegler, who skipped the world trials after contracting the swine flu, and Chad La Tourette, who won the mile at the World University Games in a time that would have made the final in Rome. Because he competed at the World University Games, La Tourette was unable to swim at the world trials.

We'll have recaps of all the sessions on swimmingworld.com.

And finally some disturbing news out of Italy. We just learned that Markus Rogan, who was a backstroke star on the international scene for many years, was beaten by four bodyguards outside a club in Ostia Sunday night. Rogan told the Austrian news website krone.at that he was not drunk, though the club's management claims Rogan was drunk and had to be restrained after rowdy behavior. Rogan suffered bruises on his face and a broken foot. He is being treated at an Italian hospital.

Rogan won silver medals in both backstrokes at the 2004 Olympics and was fourth in the 200 back in Bejing. He competed at the world championships for Austria last week, placing 11th in the 100 back and 27th in the 200.
