SwimmingWorldMagazine.com Rewind: 1990 World Swimmers of the Year

By Jason Marsteller

PHOENIX, Arizona, October 29. THIS December, Swimming World Magazine will roll out its 2006 World Swimmers of the Year. The American, African, European and Pacific Rim Region Swimmers of the Year also will be announced in our final edition of the year.

SwimmingWorldMagazine.com Rewind will travel back through the years to reminisce about previous winners throughout the next two months in anticipation of this year's celebration.

Today's Rewind checks out the 1990 winners: Janet Evans and Mike Barrowman.

Here is an excerpt of the story written in the December issue of 1990:

Phooey to all the BEST self-proclaimed perfect prognosticators who have been quoted saying, "As we begin this new decade, swimming shall make great strides and changes, not only in the number of record-breaking times but in the faces atop the winners blocks."

This time last year, Swimming World voted for Janet Evans and Mike Barrowman as the 1989 World Swimmers of the Year. Deja vu. Evans and Barrowman repeated their strong efforts and were elected the 1990 World Swimmers of the Year–marking the first time in over a decade both male and female swimmers won the award in successive years.

While Barrowman has won the award twice, this season marks the third World Swimmer award for Evans, winning both last season and in 1987, as well as winning the American Swimmer of the Year for the fourth consecutive time dating back to 1987.
