Swimming World Publishes Controversial Photo of Paralympian with American Flag

PHOENIX, Arizona, May 5. SWIMMING World Magazine ends each month with a parting shot photo. The May issue has a dramatic photo of a disabled swimmer from the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games. The athlete is starting on a block that is draped with a towel depicting a flag of the United States of America.

Some of our readers have expressed concern that the America flag should not be used in such a way. The swimmer is Roy Perkins, gold medalist from San Diego, Calif. He is a double leg and double arm amputee. The rules from the International Paralympic Committee allow their athletes to cover their blocks with a single-layer towel if it aids in their comfort and stability.

Perkins uses the American flag to show his patriotism. Swimming World Magazine printed the photo as a powerful visual of an athlete displaying his determination and pride while representing his country in Beijing.
