Swimming World Cactus Classic: Swimming World’s Own Jeff Commings Bests FINA Masters World Record; Susan von der Lippe Sets WR in Prelims

TEMPE/SCOTTSDALE, Arizona, May 25. COMPETING in a new age group, Swimming World associate producer Jeff Commings put on a show in the final race of the Swimming World Cactus Classic. Meanwhile, Loveland's Susan von der Lippe lowered her FINA Master world record in the 50 fly during prelims.

Commings, 35, who already owns the FINA Masters world record in the 30-34 50 breast with a 29.01, dominated the final swim of the weekend with a swift time of 28.53. That performance crushed the former 35-39 division record of 28.95 set by Russia's Vladislar Bragin in 2007.

Guillame Filion of Canada placed second in the race with a 30.09, while Sun Devil's Nick Brunelli demonstrated his sprinter's range with a third-place 30.28.

von der Lippe, 43, also took down a FINA Masters world record during prelims. She topped qualifying in the women's 15 & over 50 fly with a time of 28.52. That time eclipsed her 40-44 age division global mark of 28.62 set back in 2006. She scratched the evening session.

Scottsdale Aquatic's Lindsey Laporte claimed the women's 15 & over 800 free in 9:21.88. Emily Christiansen finished second in 9:28.26, while Scottsdale's Megan Cox placed third in 9:29.00.

BEST's Noriko Inada, 30, took a run at her FINA Masters world record, but settled for the women's 15 & over 50 back title in 29.42. Her 30-34 division standard is a 29.15 set August 2008. Mount Hood's Laura Miller took second in 30.93, while Lake Oswego's Karen Turner touched third in 31.00.

Lake Oswego's Mackenzie Luick topped the women's 15 & over 50 breast with a time of 33.42. Sun Devil's Sara McDaniel posted a second-place 33.98, while teammate Ashley Evans finished third in 34.86.

McDaniel returned in the women's 15 & over 50 fly with a winning time of 28.82. Miller picked up her second silver of the day with a 29.02, while Turner took third for the second time as well with a 29.07.

Sun Devil's Xavier Mohammed pocketed the men's 15 & over 1500 free crown in 15:57.18 with Tyler Pennington finishing second in 16:29.04. Mount Hood's Brett Nagle placed third in 16:46.62.

Brunelli won the men's 15 & over 50 back in 27.69, while Metro's Carl Weigley touched second in 28.46. Sun Devil's Max Laney rounded out the top three in 28.81.

Weigley grabbed the men's 15 & over 50 fly title in 25.19 with BEST's Kyle Shores taking second in 25.43. Brunelli completed the podium in 25.65.
