Swimming World Cactus Classic: Susan von der Lippe, Nick Brunelli Set FINA World Masters Records

TEMPE/SCOTTSDALE, Arizona, May 23. THE second night of long course meter action at the Swimming World Magazine Cactus Classic featured two FINA Masters World records.

For the women, Mount Hood's Laura Miller topped the women's 15 & over 100 free with a time of 57.82. That swim beat the meet record of 57.89 set by Caitlin Andrew last year. Sun Devil's Katie Haron finished second in 59.01, while Lake Oswego's Karen Turner took third in 59.47.

Arizona Marlin Danielle Lee took the women's 15 & over 200 back in 2:21.59, while Sun Devil's Jamie Martinez took second in 2:22.25. Foothills' Mackenzie Stein placed third in 2:24.81.

BEST's Christine Olson captured the women's 15 & over 100 breast in 1:13.32. UWSF's Erica Stock placed second in 1:14.19 with Lake Oswego's Mackenzie Luick finishing third in 1:14.45.

Loveland's Susan von der Lippe, 43, won the women's 15 & over 100 fly in 1:03.36, which cleared her FINA World Masters record of 1:03.38 set in 2006. Miller placed second in 1:04.44 with Turner taking third in 1:04.68. Sun Devil's Shoshanna Rutemiller grabbed fourth in 1:05.24.

Turner returned in the women's 15 & over 200 IM with a winning time of 2:22.14. Sun Devil's Ashley Evans took second in 2:22.68 with Stock taking third in 2:26.12.

In relay action, Sun Devil's Tinsley Andrews, Samantha Caldwell, Katie Haron and Jess Perazzo won the women's 15 & over 400 free relay with a time of 4:01.52.

For the men, Sun Devil's Nick Brunelli, 27, won the men's 15 & over 100 free in 50.46. That performance beat the FINA World Masters record of 50.74 set by Nick Shackell back in 2000. Silver Fins' Tyler Messerschmidt placed second in 51.94 with Steve Neuwert taking third in 52.94.

Sun Devil's Xavier Mohammed claimed his third gold of the meet with a 2:05.07 in the men's 15 & over 200 back. Teammate Max Laney finished second in 2:08.09, while Messerschmidt finished third in 2:08.91.

Nate Telep of Sun Devil won the men's 15 & over 100 breast in 1:06.09. Mount Hood's Mike Stratton took second in 1:08.19, while Tucson Ford's TJ Lundstrom placed third in 1:08.43.

Metro Aquatic's Carl Weigley took the men's 15 & over 100 fly title in 56.24 with BEST's Kyle Shores (57.04) and Silver Fins' Alex Hier (58.00) rounding out the top three.

Clayton Myers grabbed the men's 15 & over 200 IM crown in 2:09.37, while Mount Hood's Mike Stratton took second in 2:14.95. Jay Giddens completed the podium in 2:15.35.

Sun Devil's William Swiss, Londen Thomas, Edgar Febres and Kenny Walton won the men's 15 & over 400 free relay in 4:11.39.
