Swimming Canada Names Final Four Host Bid Cities for Olympic, Paralympic Trials

OTTAWA, Ontario, Canada, October 21. SWIMMING Canada has selected four cities as finalists to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Swimming Trials.

Quebec City, Montreal, Edmonton and Toronto have all submitted strong bids to host the six-day event, Swimming Canada’s highest-profile domestic competition in the quadrennial.

The selection meet will run from April 2-7, 2016, as Canada’s top swimmers compete to be nominated to the national teams for the 2016 Olympics and Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Quebec City is proposing hosting the event at the Universit? Laval’s recently completed Piscine PEPS. Edmonton would host at the Kinsmen Sports Centre, site of the 1978 Commonwealth Games. Montreal, meanwhile, boasts the Piscines du Parc Olympique from the 1976 Olympics, which is undergoing renovations. The fourth and final proposed location is Toronto’s Pan Am and Parapan Am Aquatics Centre, currently under construction.

“We have four strong contenders to host this marquee event, and that bodes well for swimming in Canada,” said Swimming Canada CEO Ahmed El-Awadi. “We are talking about four great cities with four excellent venues. A great deal of work went in to each bid and we appreciate these cities stepping up.”

An internal committee will review each bid with a goal of announcing a host city by Nov. 15. More than 700 athletes and close to 2,000 spectators and family members are expected to travel to the winning city, with live coverage broadcast on Sportsnet all six nights.

Montreal hosted the 2012 event at the Olympic pool, bringing an estimated $5 million in economic impact to the city, and $8 million to the province of Quebec.
