ADELAIDE – Swimming Australia has announced a 20-strong Australian Swim Team following the conclusion of the national short course championships in Adelaide will leave the country this Saturday, November 29 ahead of the 2014 FINA World Short Course Championships in Doha.

The 12th FINA World Short Course competition will run for five days from December 3 to 7 at the Hamad Aquatic Centre in Doha where around 900 swimmers from all over the world will race to be crowned the short course world champion for 2014.

Australian Short Course record holders Emily Seebohm and Mitchell Larkin who both impressed with internationally competitive times in their respective events in Adelaide earlier this month, will be chasing top spot on the podium in Doha next week.

Larkin who holds the Australian short course records in both the 100 and 200m backstroke will contest both events in Doha along with the 50m backstroke while Seebohm, the Australian short course record holder in the 100m backstroke, will race in the 50, 100 and 200m backstroke as well as the 100 and 200m individual medley.

After a breakout season on the international circuit that saw him win gold at both the Commonwealth Games and Pan Pacific Championships this year, Cameron McEvoy will also headline the team and will race in the 50, 100 and 200m freestyle events.

The Australian team features a mix of youth and experience with three Australian Swim Team debutants in Queenslanders Daniel Smith (Miami), Leah Neale (Indooroopilly) and David Morgan (TSS Aquatics) joining the likes of Olympian and four time world short course representative Kylie Palmer and Commonwealth Games and Pan Pacific Championship medallists from this year Sally Hunter and Matthew Abood.

With 46 events (34 individual and 12 relays) featured in the competition schedule, there will be a total of 138 medals up for grabs.

Swimming Australia Head Coach, Jacco Verhaeren said the world short course championships would be a great opportunity for the swimmers to test themselves and practice race specific skills ahead of the 2015 swimming season.

“We have an exciting team heading over to Doha with a number of new rising stars joining some already experienced and world class swimmers,” Verhaeren said. “I think the standard of racing will be high and for the new team members it will be a chance to experience the environment of an international meet and become familiar with the process as well as a good opportunity for the whole team to test themselves and fine tune their skills on the world stage ahead of the major meets next year,” Verhaeren said.

“The world short course team will be looking to cap off a successful year in the pool for Australia, following on from their recent performance at the Hancock Prospecting Pan Pacific Championships on the Gold Coast and their record gold medal haul at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.”
