Swimming Australia Announces Adelaide to Host 2012 Australian Olympic Trials

ADELAIDE, Australia, May 23. SWIMMING Australia has today announced that the newly opened SA Aquatic & Leisure Centre in Adelaide will host the 2012 Australian Swimming Championships, incorporating selection for the swimming component of the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The 2012 Australian Swimming Championships will be held over eight days of heats and finals competition from March 15 to 22.

Swimming Australia CEO Kevin Neil says the announcement is confirmation that Adelaide now has one of the premier swimming facilities in Australia.

"The state of South Australia has invested heavily in the development of a fantastic facility and has shown great foresight and commitment to the development of the sport," said Neil."The recent Australian Age Championships, with more than 1500 competitors, showed that the venue is capable of hosting major events and the feedback from the athletes, coaches and swimming community was very positive."

"Events SA has been an extremely professional organisation to work with already on events this year, and we are looking forward to continuing that good working relationship into 2012 and beyond."

In addition to the SA Aquatic & Leisure Centre hosting the 2012 event, the board of Swimming Australia also confirmed Adelaide will host the 2013 Australian Swimming Championships which will act as selection trials for the FINA World Championships, as well as the 2013 Australian Age Swimming Championships.

South Australian Premier Mike Rann said securing the three major swimming events heralded a new era for elite swimming in the state.

"Hosting the country's top swimmers at our new swim centre as they battle for Olympic selection will be fantastic for South Australia and for swimming. I'm sure our elite swimmers will love competing in our state-of-the-art centre," said Rann. "We are also excited to be hosting the 2013 Australian Swimming Championships and the 2013 Australian Age Swimming Championships."

"Securing these events reinforces the value of our investment in the new SA Aquatic & Leisure Centre, both in securing major events and in supporting the sport of swimming in South Australia."

Swimming South Australia General Manager Craig Hobart said today's announcement is just another great step for the sport which has enjoyed a fantastic start to the year already.

"We've opened a great new facility, hosted the Age Championships, and are now preparing for the Short Course Championships in early July," said Hobart. "To earn the right to host the 2012 and 2013 Australian Championships and selection trials is a huge boost for swimming in South Australia and everyone is really looking forward to putting on some great events."

Challenge Stadium in Perth will host the 2012 Australian Short Course Championships from September 12-16, while Adelaide will also host the next major event on the swimming calendar when this year's Australian Short Course Championships start on July 1 for three days, to be previewed by world championship relay trials from June 29.
Note: Adelaide last hosted a major open Australian swimming meet in 1997, with the Pan Pacific Selection Trials taking place in March of that year.
