Swedish Short Course Nationals: Sarah Sjostrom Shines Again; Third-Ranked 100 Free Time

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, November 26. DURING the third evening of racing at the Swedish Short Course Nationals, Sarah Sjostrom nearly tracked down her second Swedish record of the week.

Sjostrom missed the record by the slimmest of margins after clocking a 52.18 to win the women's 100 free. That effort just missed Therese Alshammar's national record of 52.17 from 2000, and jumped her to third in the world in the event. She stands behind only Britta Steffen (52.00) and Missy Franklin (52.09) in what is quickly becoming an event to watch this short course season. Nathalie Lindborg took second in 54.12, while Magdalena Kuras wound up third in 54.18.

Jennie Johansson nearly cleared her third-ranked season best of 1:05.27 set in Stockholm on the World Cup circuit with a 1:05.97 to win the women's 100 breast this evening. Rebecca Ejdervik finished second in 1:06.16 for 11th in the rankings, while Joline Hostman placed third in 1:06.23 for 14th in the rankings.

Sara Thyden clocked a 4:34.30 to claim the women's 400 IM, and vault to 11th in the world rankings. Ida Marko-Varga finished second in 4:38.15, while Ida Sandin touched third in 4:42.60.

Jakob Dorch ripped off a 27.15 to win the men's 50 breast, and jump to 17th in the world rankings in the process. Niklas Tour placed second in 27.82, while Johannes Skagius wound up third in 28.18.

Sebastian Holmberg topped the men's 200 IM in 1:59.82, while Daniel Lundahl placed second in 2:00.63. Linus Kanth earned third in 2:00.79.

Petter Stymne claimed the men's 100 free in 48.41, while Oscar Ekstrom placed second in 48.64. Johan Bengtsson wound up third in 49.06.

Ida Lindborg stopped the clock in 2:08.99 for the women's 200 back title. Sandra Hafstrom (2:09.35) and Eljena Knutsson (2:12.51) rounded out the top three in the distance dorsal event.

Sebastian Holmberg finished first in the men's 50 back with a 24.43. Niklas Borin touched second in 24.50, while Pontus Renholm finished third in 24.55.

Gustav Aberg Lejdstrom won the men's 1500 free in 15:18.56, while Rickard Wirzen took second in 15:44.17. Adam Paulsson picked up third in 15:55.22.

In relay racing, Petra Granlund, Sara Thyden, Gabriella Fagundez and Josefin Lindkvist won the women's 200 medley relay in 1:50.85. Thyden, Fagundez, Granlund and Ida Sandin returned at the end of the night with a 7:57.64 to win the women's 800 free relay. Pontus Palmqvist, Jakob Dorch, Lars Frolander and Oscar Ekstrom snared the men's 400 medley relay title in 3:34.02.
