SUNY New Paltz Swimming Picks Up Road Victories at Oswego State

OSWEGO – SUNY New Paltz swimming went on the road and came away with a pair of victories against Oswego State.

The State University of New York at New Paltz women’s swimming team won 10 of the 11 events contested in its first dual meet of the season on Saturday against SUNY Oswego, downing the Lakers by a 150-53 final.

New Paltz rises to 1-0 with the win and hosts Vassar College in its 2014-15 home opener on Saturday, Nov. 22, at 1 p.m. Oswego drops to 1-4 with the loss and visits The College at Brockport next on Saturday, Nov. 22, at 1 p.m.

Individually, seniors Kat Buyes (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill) and Samantha Granan (Hyde Park, N.Y./Franklin D. Roosevelt) each posted two victories. Buyes won the 200 freestyle (2:03.59) and the 500 freestyle (5:31.59), while Granan took first in the 200 individual medley (2:20.33) and the 100 breaststroke (1:10.74). Sophomore Ann Fici (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) won the 1,000 freestyle (11:25.87), freshman Megan Joseph (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) touched first in the 50 freestyle (25.80), junior Casey O’Connor (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) claimed the 100 freestyle (57.52) and freshman Molly McCulloch (Rome, N.Y./Holland Patent) topped the field in the 100 backstroke (1:03.79) to round out the Hawks’ individual winners.

The 200 medley relay team of O’Connor, Granan, junior Maggie Heaton (New Milford, Conn./New Milford) and junior Cassidy Griger (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown Central) charted a winning time of 1:54.97, while the 200 freestyle relay squad of McCulloch, Joseph, junior Ella Graffin (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) and junior Krista VerMeersch (Newark, N.Y./Newark) clocked the top standard of 1:42.91.

Second-place finishes came from Graffin in the 200 freestyle (2:05.32), McCulloch in the 50 freestyle (25.91), senior Colleen Stewart (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) in the 200 individual medley (2:26.75) and the 100 breaststroke (1:13.85), Heaton in the 100 butterfly (1:03.00) and sophomore Aimee Del Favero (Auburn, N.Y./Home School) in the 100 freestyle (58.69).

Senior Jack Spader (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck), junior Will Koenig (Highland, Calif./Redlands East Valley) and freshman Marc Piliero (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) were each double winners individually for the Hawks. Spader touched first in the 1,000 freestyle (10:34.06) and the 500 freestyle (5:09.11), Koenig won the 50 freestyle (22.07) and the 100 freestyle (48.93) and Piliero claimed the 200 individual medley (2:07.60) and the 100 backstroke (57.75).

Other individual event winners included junior Rod Taskindoust (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown North) in the 200 freestyle (1:51.43) and freshman Caleb Treadwell (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) in the 100 butterfly (56.14).

The 200 medley relay team of Piliero, junior Ryan Lindgren (Hurley, N.Y./Kingston), Treadwell and Koenig kicked off the meet with a winning time of 1:41.57, while the 200 freestyle relay contingent of sophomore Luke Zenir (Cherry Valley, N.Y./Cooperstown Central), junior Brandon Finn (Tomkins Cove, N.Y./North Rockland), Taskindoust and Treadwell combined for a winning standard of 1:30.04 at the end of the meet.

Second-place performances came from sophomore Rob Cahn (Bellmore, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) in the 1,000 freestyle (10:47.11) and the 500 freestyle (5:14.38) and Lindgren in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.47).

The Oswego State men’s swimming and diving team was beaten by New Paltz 141-64 at home on Saturday afternoon. The loss snaps a two-game win streak for the team, dropping its record to 2-3 on the season.

Leading the Lakers in points on the day was sophomore Jacob Mullett with 15. The Syracuse native earned nine points placing first in the 100-yard breaststroke, which he finished with a time of 1:03.68. Mullett then added four points with a second place finish in the 200-yard IM and two points finishing third in the 200-yard medley relay.

Also earning points for the Lakers were Austin Nau and Zach Gerber, who contributed 12 points each.

Men’s swimming and diving returns to the pool at 1 p.m. this Saturday when they travel to Brockport for a dual meet.

The Oswego State women’s swimming and diving team fell to New Paltz 150-53 at home on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the team’s record drops to 1-4 on the season.

Senior Sabia Filiaci led all Lakers in points with 13. Filiaci placed first in the 100-yard butterfly, clocking in at 59.62 and earning the team nine points in the process. She also nabbed 2 points in both the 50-yard freestyle and the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Natalie Brophy contributed nine points on the day, four of which came from a second place finish in the 100-yard backstroke. Emily Burton pitched in as well, earning four points in both the 1000-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle.

Women’s swimming and diving returns to the pool at 1 p.m. this Saturday when they travel to Brockport for a dual meet.
