Mount Saint Mary Press Release

The Mount Saint Mary College men’s and women’s swimming teams honored their two seniors, Jason Lorch (Plainview, N.Y.) and Danielle Rodriguez (Highland, N.Y.), in a Senior Night ceremony prior to Friday evening’s meet against the State University of New York at New Paltz. The New Paltz men beat the Knight men, 127-69, while the Hawk women defeated the Knight women, 115-87. The MSMC men’s team falls to 6-5 overall, while the women dropped to 9-3 on the season.

Lorch set season-low times of 23.98 in the 50-yard freestyle, and 54.14 in the 100-yard freestyle Friday evening. Rodriguez just missed a season-best time in the 50-yard freestyle, as she took second at 26.77. She missed her best time in the 100-yard freestyle by less than a second with a time of 1:00.45.

The Knight women bounced back from a defeat in the 400-yard medley relay to start the day by following it up with a first, second, third finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Sophomore Jessica Daigle (Trumbull, Conn.) touched first at 11:43.88, then freshman Rachael Stone (Wallingford, Conn.) took second at 11:52.45, and freshman Jessica McClure (West Haven, Conn.) finished third at 12:15.37. In the next women’s event, junior Lauren Becerra (White Plains, N.Y.) was narrowly edged out by New Paltz’s Samantha Granan for the top time, touching in 2:05.49 to miss first place by 0.06.

Becerra recovered later in the evening to win the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:36.63. Daigle finished fourth in the same event, but set her best time of the season at 5:43.53. The Knights had a nice showing in the 200-yard backstroke, as freshman Kate Bell (Wilton, Conn.) and sophomore Regina Zeoli (Washingtonville, N.Y.) took first and second with times of 2:24.67 and 2:26.49, respectively. Both times were season-lows for Bell and Zeoli.

Junior Christopher Sagan (West Hempstead, N.Y.), fresh off back-to-back Skyline Conference Men’s Swimmer of the Week awards, had another solid meet for the Knights. He started his evening with a win in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:20.46, beating his previous season-best by more than 12 seconds. He also set his best time of the year in the 500-yard freestyle at 5:31.62 to place third, but freshman Ryan Ward (Brooklyn, N.Y.) took first with a season-low time of 5:20.31.

The relay team of Ward, Schoenherr, junior Sam Watson (Groton, Conn.) and Lorch set a new season-best at 3:29.33 in the 400-yard freestyle relay to take second place.

Saturday’s scheduled dual-meet against Lehman College was canceled due to the expected snow storm. Therefore, the Knights will next swim on Friday, Jan. 30, at the Skyline Conference Championship meet, hosted by Maritime College. Friday’s portion of the event will begin at 6:30 p.m., and then continue on Saturday, Jan. 31, at 12 p.m.
