Sunbelt Conference Championships, Day Three

ROCKWALL, Texas, February 24. DENVER'S men and women remained in the lead after three days of competition at the 2012 Sun Belt Conference Swimming & Diving Championships here at the Rockwall Aquatics Center.

Day three of the championships got off to another rousing start as Florida Atlantic's Eszter Bucz broke the SBC meet and conference record in the women's 400 individual medley.

The junior swam 4:12.64 to place first while Sonia Perez Arau of FIU and Alex Suppan of Denver came in second and third, respectively.

On the men's side, Tyler Pennington of Denver led a one-two-three finish for the Pioneers as they stretched their team lead early on day three. Pennington swam and NCAA B cut time of 3:49.62. Clayton Myers and Jeremiah Zgliczynski finished second and third, respectively, for DU.

DU's Sam Corea picked up the win in the women's 100 fly with a time of 53.75, an NCAA B cut time, while Kristiana Feeser of WKU came in second, also a B cut time. Rosa Gentile of North Texas finished third.

Heitor Rodrigues had perhaps the best swim of the day, just not in the finals. The sophomore from Brazil swam an SBC meet and conference record in the prelims (47.14) and followed that up with a first-place, but slightly slower (47.29) performance in the finals. Teammate Kevin Knezevich finished second for the Toppers as they picked up some much needed points in the nights second event.

FIU's Johanna Gustafsdottir earned her second win of the championships in the women's 200 freestyle. The freshman from Iceland took home top honors with a time of 1:48.09, an NCAA B cut time. Catia Weickgenant of North Texas finished second to Gustafsdottir with Jonna Nyback of Florida Atlantic swimming third.

Adam Dajka won the men's 200 freestyle for the Toppers with teammate Neal Rushing finishing third. Denver's Jay Giddens finished second.

In the 100 breast finals, Krista Rossum of NT came in first with a time of 1:01.46, breaking the previous meet record by three one hundredths of a second. WKU's duo of Claire Conlon and Stephanie Martin finished second and third.

WKU went one-two in the men's 100 breast led by Billy Kunkel (54.28). Luke Musser finished second with a time of 54.55. Both Kunkel's and Musser's times were NCAA B cut times.

In the women's 100 backstroke, DU's Corea picked up her second win of the evening. The freshman swam 53.73, an NCAA B cut time, tying the SBC meet and conference record set in 2010. WKU's Hilary Mishler was second in 54.28 while Mona Groteguth of NT finished third.

DU took the top two spots in the men's 100 backstroke led by Kyle Milberg in 47.52. Milberg's teammate, William Van Dehy finished second. Chris Housden of WKU was third as the Toppers took spots three through six in the event earning 58 team points to keep pace with the Pioneers.

FIU's Sabrina Beaupre won her second diving event, winning the one-meter dive with a new SBC meet record of 307.70 points. This marked the second consecutive year Beaupre swept the diving events.

North Texas claimed first in the women's 400 medley relay, the evenings final event, while WKU's men took top honors in the men's 400 medley relay.

Tomorrow's preliminary action will begin at 11 a.m. with the 200 backstroke. Finals will begin at 6 p.m.
