Summit League Championships: Day One

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, February 18. THE Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships began Thursday at the IU Natatorium, and despite numerous personal-best times, the IUPUI swimming and diving teams were able to put just one swimmer into Thursday evening’s finals.

Elizabeth Bourgeois earned a spot in the ‘B’ final of the 50 freestyle, swimming a 24.91 in the preliminaries to record the 13th-fastest time among the finalists.

In the evening session, Bourgeois picked up where she left off, taking third place in the consolation final and posting a career-best time of 24.79.

Bourgeois was just one of several swimmers affected by the addition of South Dakota to the conference championships, adding a seventh school to the race for 16 finals slots.

Michael Steurer and Tyler McGowan were among those most directly affected, as each cut down on their finalist times from a year ago but could not reach the final 16. Steuerer posted a time of 1:58.88 to become the first alternate in the 200 IM, while McGowan was 22nd in 1:59.46.

On the 1-meter diving board, Mitchell Gauger narrowly missed earning All-Summit honors, taking fourth with a score of 220.20 after six dives.

Day Two of The Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships will begin with prelims at 11 a.m., while finals will start at 6:30 p.m.. Prior to the beginning of finals, the conference will honor the graduating seniors from each school, starting at 6 p.m.
