Streamlined News: Swimmers Making Waves Globally


PHOENIX, Arizona, April 2. STARTING tomorrow morning in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada will hold its trials for the world championships. Ryan Cochrane will have the spotlight on him this week, as the top swimmer in the wake of one of Canada's most successful showings in the pool at the Olympics. Cochrane won silver in the 1500 free in the Olympics, and he will likely coast through in qualifying for up to four freestyle events. On the women's side, Sinead Russell will be one to watch after a successful NCAA championships. Russell was a finalist in the 200 back in London, but after this past freshman season at Florida, has improved her sprint backstroke as well.

Cochrane's biggest foe at the world championships in Barcelona will be Sun Yang, who will be looking for a distance freestyle sweep after taking the 400 and 1500 freestyles in London. Sun is back into training full time in China after taking some time off to look for a new coach, and at the Chinese nationals he swam a respectable 3:42.93 in the 400 free. Olympic champion Ye Shiwen and 100 fly Olympic silver medalist Lu Ying also won events safely, securing their spots on the world championship roster.
