Streamlined News, May 15, 2012: Matthew Mitcham’s Olympics in Jeopardy; Poland Olympic Selection Continues; Bousquet’s Rib Injury

PHOENIX, Arizona, May 15. MATTHEW Mitcham might not be in London in August to defend his 10-meter diving Olympic title, according to reports from the Australian media. Mitcham performed well at the Australian diving Olympic trials last month, but the Australian diving federation required those in the running for Olympic selection to also perform well at one of two elite diving meets in the United States and Canada. Mitcham elected to not compete in Canada, choosing last weekend's USA Diving Grand Prix instead. Mitcham did not make the final of the individual platform event in Fort Lauderdale, forcing him to wait and see if the selection committee will overlook the placing last weekend. Mitcham has been recovering from an abdominal injury suffered in 2011, but has not been up to par since then. Diving Australia is expected to announce the roster for the Olympic team sometime this week.

Over in Poland Konrad Czerniak added the 100 butterfly to the events he'll swim at the Olympics. Czerniak swam a 52.28 to officially get on the Olympic roster, though he did swim a little bit faster at the Olympic test event in March. Czerniak won the 100 free today in 49.35, too slow to automatically qualify for London in that event. Marcin Tarczynski, the 200 IM NCAA champion, was unable to get under the FINA A standard in the 200 IM, going a 2:01.12, a full second slower than the automatic qualifying time. He may get to go to London, however, as Poland's only entrant in the event, since he swam faster than the B standard.

The French sports newspaper L'Equipe reported on Sunday that Fred Bousquet has suffered a rib injury and might not be competing at the European championships next week. According to the article, Bousquet felt the injury just before the 100 fly at the Charlotte Grand Prix on Friday, swam that race and then felt such severe pain that he decided to scratch the rest of the meet. The exact cause of the injury was not reported in L'Equipe. Bousquet, as you may remember, did not make the French Olympic team, so the European championships is likely to be his big meet for the long course season.
