Streamlined News: IPC World Championships World Record Roundup

PHOENIX, Arizona, August 13. THE The first day of competition at the IPC world championships was not a slow one. Eight world records fell across several divisions, with Konstantin Lisenkov breaking the world record in the 100 backstroke twice in the S8 division. We told you about his 1:04.12 from prelims on yesterday’s show, and the Russian followed it up in finals with a 1:03.32. We also told you about the records set by Nely Miranda Herrera and Olga Sviderska on yesterday’s show.

Other world records included Ihar Boki in the 200 IM in the SM13 division, where the Belarusian posted a 2:03.79, breaking his world mark of 2:06.30 from just last year, and two world records by British swimmers. Josef Craig swam a 4:39.14 in the 400 free to lower his own record in the S7 bracket, and Jessica Applegate posted a 2:09.88 in the S14 bracket in the women’s 200 freestyle.

The other world record swim on the first day was a 1:00.15 in the 100 free by New Zealander Sophie Pascoe. She dropped just two tenths off her record from last year.

No Americans set world records, but three members of Team USA picked up gold medals: Rebecca Meyers, Cortney Jordan and Roy Perkins.

No world records were set in the preliminaries this morning, but we could see some marks fall tonight. Ian Silverman of the United States is going for the world record of 4:04.20 in the 400 freestyle for the S10 division, and Daniel Dias of Brazil will be gunning for his own world record of 2:26.51 in the 200 free for the S5 bracket. And today marks the first swim for Jessica Long in her quest for multiple medals. We’ll see her in the 200 IM at the end of the session.
