PHOENIX, Arizona, May 2. JAMES Magnussen showed that he will be a force to be reckoned with at the world championships this summer, not just in the 100 freestyle, but in the 50 as well. Earlier today in Australia Magnussen won the 50 free with a 21.52, which is now the fastest time in the world this year. Magnussen has been making large inroads in the 50 free in the past year, including swimming in the Olympic final in London. Matt Abood beat Matt Targett to the second spot in the event on the world championship roster by one hundredth of a second with a 21.95. Also swimming the fastest time in the world in Adelaide today was Belinda Hocking, who won the 200 back with a 2:07.17. Hocking was the silver medalist behind Missy Franklin at the 2011 world championships. The Australian nationals concludes tomorrow with Cate Campbell looking to replicate James Magnussen's feat and win the sprint freestyles and take the world's number one spot in both. She's the top seed in the 50 free and could pull off the double. Thomas Fraser-Holmes, who started his nationals with a false start in the 400 free then won the 200 free, will be back in the 400 IM for another event to swim at worlds.

Back here in the States, several swimmers are making late college decisions, with one of the biggest coming from Lauren Driscoll, who decided to transfer from UC-Berkeley to Tennessee next fall. Driscoll was a highly-recruited swimmer out of high school but did not swim up to her potential at the NCAAs. She'll be part of an impressive distance freestyle group at Tennessee and part of a women's team that had a standout season.

Allison Schmitt won the coveted Honda Sports Award yesterday as the top female collegiate swimmer of the past season. Schmitt won the 200 freestyle at the NCAA championships and was a key cog in helping Georgia win their first team title in eight years. Schmitt is now a finalist for the Honda Cup Award, which honors the top female collegiate athlete across all sports. Congratulations to Allison, and best of luck in the Honda Cup voting.
