Streamlined News: Competition Roundup in South Africa, Russia

PHOENIX, Arizona, April 18. THE South African world championship trials resumed earlier today in Port Elizabeth after a two-day hiatus to clear up the murky pool water. Reports indicate the water quality has improved dramatically. Results are still coming in from South Africa, and we'll bring them to you on swimmingworld.com as they become available.

Over in Russia at that country's world championship trials, Vyacheslav Sinkevich posted the fastest 200 breaststroke in the world so far this year with a 2:08.62 in the semifinals, breaking the Russian record of 2:09.36 and lowering his lifetime best by a little more than a second. Sinkevich was ninth in the 2012 Olympics in the 200 breast and is the second man under 2:10 this year with world record holder Akihiro Yamaguchi also dipping under 2:10 last week. Russia's men's 800 free relay looks to be in decent shape, with the top four all going under 1:47 in the 200 free today led by Danila Izotov's 1:46.37. And Vlad Morozov closed out the session today with a Russian record in the 50 backstroke, posting the fastest semifinal time with a 24.80, breaking his own record by six hundredths of a second.
