PHOENIX, Arizona, April 10. SINCE the passing of Olympic champion Mark Lenzi yesterday after a battle with issues stemming from critically low blood pressure, people from all aquatic sports have reached out to remember Mark. Laura Wilkinson, who won gold on the platform in 2000, wrote on Facebook: “I remember when I missed making '96 Olympic Trials, Mark Lenzi sat down with me & told me to let it light a fire inside. He believed in me.”
Funeral services for Lenzi will be held today at 6 p.m. at the Wilkerson Funeral Home in Greenville, North Carolina, where he lived with his wife. Lenzi had a storied career in diving. He was the last American to win an Olympic medal in diving, winning bronze in 1996 in addition to gold in 1992 on the three-meter springboard. He was also NCAA champion for Indiana in 1989 and 1990.
