PHOENIX, Arizona, August 30, 2011. THE Jose Finkel Trophy meet is underway in Rio de Janeiro, with some swimmers likely to try and qualify for the Brazilian Olympic roster here.

This meet is one of several the Brazilian swimming federation has picked for swimmers to try and beat the qualifying times for Olympic selection. Those times are much faster than the FINA A cut, so it’s likely Brazil won’t field a full team for the Olympics, but will only bring their most elite swimmers. World champions Cesar Cielo and Felipe Silva are already on the Olympic team, as is Thiago Pereira and a few others, based on times swum at world championships or the Maria Lenk Trophy meet earlier this year.

With most of the top Brazilian swimmers waiting until the Pan American Games this October, we might not see extremely fast swims this week. Cielo cruised through the semifinals of the 50 free with a 22.73. Nicholas Santos, who was one of three Brazilian swimmers to get a warning after testing positive for furosemide earlier this year and was removed from the Brazilian world championship roster, will be the top qualifier for finals with his 22.62 from semis. Henrique Barbosa, who also got a warning from the Court of Arbitration for Sport and did not compete at worlds, won the 200 breast final today in 2:15.12.

Inge Dekker is in Rio for the meet, and the Dutch world champion will take the top seed in the 50 free final with a semifinal time of 25.42. Thiago Pereira, who placed sixth at worlds in the 200 IM with a 1:59.00, won that event in Rio today with a 2:00.15. (Editor’s note: Pereira competed in the 200 backstroke, not the 200 IM.)

We’ve got a full recap of today’s action on swimmingworld.com.

If you’re swimming for a Division I university in the United States, chances are you’re already in the pool getting ready for the new swimming season. And the NCAA has just released the qualifying times for the 2012 championships. Most of the times stayed the same, and those that got faster were only a few tenths faster than the cuts for the 2011 championships. You can see the qualifying times on our college channel at swimmingworld.com.
