PHOENIX, Arizona, December 13. JAMES Magnussen swam his first long course 100 freestyle since winning at world championships, posting a 48.63 at the Queensland state championships earlier today.

Magnussen told the media he was happy with the time, which is 1.2 seconds slower than his best time, but his coach Brant Best wasn’t too pleased. Magnussen did not shave or rest for this swim, and was quick to mention that the time is only three tenths slower than he swam last March at the Australian world championship trials, when he was shaved and rested. Magnussen has pointed to Cesar Cielo’s world record of 46.94 in the 100 free as his ultimate target.

Also of note in that 100 free race was the time posted by 17-year-old Cameron McEvoy, who placed third behind Matt Targett with a 49.19, breaking the Australian age group record set by Ian Thorpe just a few months before the 2000 Olympics.

Stephanie Rice had shoulder surgery yesterday to clear up issues she’s been having the past few weeks. Rice tweeted to her fans that the surgery went OK and that she should be back in the water before Christmas. Rice withdrew from the Queensland meet because of the shoulder problem.

Cate Campbell looks like she’s returning to form in time for making her second Olympic team. At the Queensland meet, Campbell swam a 53.82 in the 100 free, making her the ninth-fastest in the event in the world this year and second among Australians.

Katie Goldman also moved up the world rankings today, swimming an 8:24.71 in the 800 free, putting her seventh in the world. Goldman swam an 8:29.2 in the world championship final, placing sixth.

The Queensland state meet runs through the rest of the week, and if any other top swims take place, we’ll let you know.
