PHOENIX, Arizona, November 30. IT’S very rare when the Chinese send divers to the United States for a training/competition trip, but that’s what is happening this week at Miami University in Ohio.

The school is hosting a special diving meet that will mostly feature college-level divers, but will also showcase some of the rising talent from China. On the men’s side, Chen Aisen and Wu Jun will compete on the platform, while Wu Minghong will handle duties on the springboards. Xia Yuhua will highlight the competition on the women’s side. All the Chinese divers appearing at the meet were ranked in the top 15 in the world in the past two years. The Americans will have some big names on their side, including NCAA champions Kelci Bryant and Abby Johnston.

Ryan Lochte is the only swimmer nominated for the Sports Illustrated sportsperson of the year award, which will be announced on Tuesday. SI writer Kelli Anderson writes about Lochte’s determination to beat Michael Phelps after years of finishing second, and that determination paying off at the 2011 world championships. Lochte joins golfer Rory McIlroy, baseball player David Freese and speedskater Johann Olav Koss among others vying for the award.

Lochte will be stepping up for six events at the USA Swimming nationals, which begins tomorrow in Atlanta. He won’t be the only one swimming in six races. Missy Franklin and Elizabeth Beisel will swim in six events as well, but the name you’ll hear the most might be Conor Dwyer, who is entered in eight events this week, including the mile. We’ll see if he actually swims all eight. We’ll be bringing you complete coverage of the meet on swimmingworld.com, and be sure to stop by our website shortly after each finals session for “The Warm Down Show,” which will bring you analysis and commentary on each night’s races.

The British Broadcasting Company is finding themselves embroiled in controversy after announcing the nominees for the top sports personality of the year award. For the first time in five years, no females are on the list, and the country’s top triathlete, Chrissie Wellington, is calling on all female athletes to decline invitations to the gala event on December 22. Rebecca Adlington, who won a gold and silver at the swimming world championships this year, also expressed surprise at the list on her Twitter account, mentioning open water world champion Kerri-Anne Payne as one who should have been a shoo-in for a nomination. No aquatic sports athletes are nominated for this award, which includes a cricket player, a boxer, a tennis player and a couple of runners.
