PHOENIX, Arizona, October 12. THE International Athletes’ Forum met in Colorado Springs this week to discuss numerous issues, the most important one being punishment of athletes who are “convicted of a deliberate and aggravated doping offense.”

The forum believes those athletes should be removed from their sport for life. One strike, and you’re out. Currently, athletes who receive a lifetime ban have tested positive for banned substances at least twice in their lives. Athletes rarely get lifetime bans after one offense. The forum also recommended that anyone in an athlete’s inner circle who has knowledge of illegal drug taking be convicted and sanctioned. This could include coaches. Jacques Rogge, the president of the International Olympic Committee, attended the forum and heard the recommendations. It’s not known if the IOC will seriously consider the recommendations, and if so, how long it could take to make them part of policy.
