Stockbauer Named Germany’s Female Athlete of the Year

BERLIN, Germany, December 23. SWIMMER Hannah Stockbauer and cyclist Jan Ullrich have been chosen as Germany's athletes of the year by the country's sports journalists.

Stockbauer won three golds at the FINA World Championships in Barcelona in July, and earlier this month was named Female World Swimmer of the Year by Swimming World magazine. Ullrich was honored for his comeback at the Tour de France, where he finished second to American Lance Armstrong. Stockbauer beat speedskating world champions Anni Friesinger in the poll of 1,500 German sports journalists, while Formula One champion Michael Schumacher finished second to Ullrich.

The women's national soccer team that claimed the World Cup was named Team of the Year.
