Kevin Cordes didn’t panic when he was in a four-way battle for the win in the men’s 200 breaststroke at the FINA world championships, feeling confident that he would be on the medal stand in the event. As he did after the 50 breast final, he talked about holding on to the pre-race strategy and not getting overzealous as the race progressed.

“I tried to go out as smooth as I could,” he said after the race. “I knew I had a shot, so I just stuck to the game plan, and knew not to spin out … and just bring it home.”

The silver medal for Cordes was major redemption after he did not make the final in 2013, and he said that was a motivating factor before the final.

“Doing this three-day (racing schedule) is a learning experience going into next year,” he said. “It’s my first 200 breast final, so to come away with a silver, I’m really happy.”
