As reported yesterday KVIA 7 in El Paso, Texas, Steve Flato, the long-time Head Coach of Eastwood High School boy’s and girl’s swim teams, is set to retire after more than 30 years at the helm of both programs.

Coach Flato has one of the most impressive resumes in not only high school swimming, but all of high school athletics. Under Flato’s leadership the boy’s swim team has won an incredible 32 consecutive district championships and is known as one of the top high school programs in the state.

In an article posted on the Eastwood Sabre, Flato’s unique coaching style is shown to be one of the keys to his success. He is described as an extremely trusting coach who believed in his athlete’s ability to get it done when it counted the most. Known simply as ‘Steve’ to his athletes, he treated his swimmers with respect and was open and relatable when communicating with them. It’s clear that his program’s success was a direct result of the manner in which he approached his coaching. Remarking on his career, Flato said: “I’ve poured everything I’ve got into this…and there just doesn’t seem to be anything left to pour.”

Flato is also the Head Coach and Director of Aquatics for the Desert Sharks Swim Club. According to his bio, Flato has been an active participant in the sport all his life. He grew up swimming for the El Paso YMCA and was a member of the Drury College Swimming & Diving Team that captured a National Championship in 1981.

It is currently unknown who will replace Flato as the Head Coach at Eastwood High. See the video below for the news story from KVIA 7.
