Stanford Women’s Water Polo Retains Top Ranking in CWPA Week 14 Poll

BRIDGEPORT – The top of the national water polo scene remains the domain of the Cardinal as Stanford University stays at No. 1 in the Women’s National Top 20 rankings and highlights the Week 14/April 22 Women’s Varsity Polls released today by the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA).

The top teams in the other two polls also remain the same as Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (Division III Top 10) once again tops the Division III National Top 10, while the duo of Indiana University and Princeton University remain in a tie for the No. 1 position in the CWPA Top 10 league rankings.

Voted on by a panel of coaches from the CWPA, Western Water Polo Association (WWPA), Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), Big West Conference, Golden Coast Conference, Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the polls are compiled and released on Wednesday during the season through the week following the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.

2015 Women’s Varsity National Top 20 (Week 14)

Stanford University clings to the top spot for a second week as the Cardinal garnered 99 points to lead the Week 14/April 22 Women’s Varsity National Top 20 Poll.

Stanford, which ranked at No. 1 in the Preseason through Week 5 polls after claiming the 2014 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship at the University of Southern California last season, leads a Top 10 which remains dominated by the left-side of the country with all 10 squads hailing from Arizona and West.

Behind the Cardinal, the University of California-Los Angeles (95 points), USC (90 points), the University of California (85 points), the University of California-Irvine (80 points), the University of Hawaii (74 points) and Arizona State University (71 points) remain locks at No. 2-to-7 as the upper echelon of the poll remains unchanged from last week.

The first shift comes at No. 8 as the University of California-Davis (63 points) edges in front of San Jose State University (60 points) as the two programs exchange the No. 8 and 9 slots in the Top 10. California State University-Northridge (57 points) completes the Top 10 entering the conference championship tournaments and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship qualifying weekend on Friday-Sunday, April 24-26.

Unlike the Top 10, the next 10 berths in the National Rankings experienced significant shifts led by Indiana University (45 points) and Princeton University (44 points) both rising one spot to take over at No. 11 and 12, respectively. The climb of the Hoosiers and Tigers forces former No. 11 Long Beach State University (38 points) back to No. 13.

Changes continue at No. 14-to-16 as the University of California-Santa Barbara (36 points) bumps up one place to No. 14, the University of the Pacific (34 points) drops a spot to No. 15 and San Diego State University (21 points) improves its position by a pair of slots by jumping up to No. 16.

Loyola Marymount University (18 points) sticks at No. 17 for another week to break-up the pattern, while the University of Michigan (15 points) falls two spots to No. 18.

Wagner College (10 points) stays at No. 19 with No. 20 Hartwick College (8 points) taking over sole possession of the final spot in the poll.

2015 Women’s Varsity Division III Top 10 (Week 14)

The Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (100 points) remain the unanimous top choice among small college programs in the Week 14/April 22 Women’s Varsity Division III Top 10 Poll.

Pomona-Pitzer leads a Top 10 which experienced significant changes from No. 3-to-No. 8.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (93 points) stays at No. 2 for another week, while Whittier College (88 points) acquires sole possession of the No. 3 slot after tying with Chapman University last week.

Chapman (84 points) falls back to No. 4 and the University of Redlands (80 points) shatters a three-way tie at No. 5 seven days back to gain a firm grip on the position this week.

California Lutheran University (74 points) noses into the No. 6 slot, while the University of La Verne (70 points) and Connecticut College (69 points) fall back to No. 7 and 8, respectively.

Washington & Jefferson College (59 points) and Occidental College (58 points) complete the Top 10.

2015 Women’s CWPA Top 10 (Week 14)

The race for the No. 1 seed at the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Championship continues with no decisive winner yet as Princeton University and Indiana University remain tied for the top spot in the Week 14/April 22 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Top 10 Poll entering the CWPA Championship at Princeton this weekend on Friday-Sunday, April 24-26.

A ranking of the league’s entire varsity membership (Division I/II/III), the poll’s No. 1 position has been traded between the Tigers (97 points) and Hoosiers (97 points) for most of the season with Indiana holding the spot four prior times (Preseason, Week 1, Week 4, Week 5) and Princeton previously claiming the berth nine times (Week 2, Week 3, Week 6, Week 7, Week 8, Week 9, Week 10, Week 11, Week 12). The duo become tied at No. 1 last week.

The remainder of the Top 10 remains unchanged as the University of Michigan (91 points), Harvard University (84 points) and Hartwick College (81 points) retain the No. 3-to-5 spots. Brown University (75 points), Bucknell University (70 points), Mercyhurst University (64 points), George Washington University (61 points) and CWPA Division III Champion Connecticut College (55 points) once again complete the Top 10 as all 10 teams will compete for the league crown this weekend with a berth to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship tournament on the line.
