Stanford Women Prove They Are No.1

TUCSON, Arizona, January 12. THE undefeated No. 1 Stanford (6-0, 2-0 Pac-10) rolled to a 143-94 victory on the road over No. 2 Arizona (5-0, 3-1 Pac-10) by winning 10 of the meet's 13 events as well as recording the top exhibition times in two others Friday at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center. Julia Smit was the only swimmer for either team to reach the NCAA `A' standard during wins in the 200 IM (1:59.47) and 200 back (1:57.46), as well as her leadoff 100 back leg (54.33) of Stanford's winning 400 medley relay squad (3:39.28, NCAA `B').

Brooke Bishop also won a pair of individual events in the pool, taking the 50 (23.08) and 100 (50.72) free in NCAA `B' marks while also anchoring Stanford's winning 400 medley relay squad. Cassidy Krug swept both the 1-meter (294.00) and 3-meter (331.75) diving events. Elizabeth Durot (1000 free, 9:56.49), Elaine Breeden (200 fly, 1:59.51, NCAA `B') and Desireé Stahley (500 free, 4:53.25) also won individual events for the Cardinal with Breeden (fly) and Caroline Bruce (breast) bridging Smit and Bishop on the 400 medley relay team.

"We were feeling tired and little nervous because Arizona is really tough team that has a good chance to win the NCAA's in March," said Stanford head coach Lea Maurer. "But, we set the tone early in the meet and kept the momentum going, never gave it up. Both teams were tired, but we were just able to close out our races and execute a little better. We know that they'll be rested and going to rebound by the NCAA's and be much better."

"We didn't really know how they were going swim," added Bishop. "We knew we were tired, but it really started off well with winning the relay and the 1000 free, and that kind of got everyone rolling. I was really happy that we won the sprints and did so well in those events. Doing that well in the sprints was really exciting because that's Arizona's specialty."

Lacey Nymeyer (200 free, 1:48.36) was the only Arizona swimmer to record the top time in an event. Jacquelyn Craft (200 breast, 2:16.84, NCAA `B') and an Arizona 400 free relay team (3:28.47) of Brandy Collins, Lindsey Kelly, Taylor Baughman and Lara Jackson were awarded wins with Stanford swimming exhibition in both events.

Stanford will complete its road trip to the desert at No. 23 Arizona State (4-4, 1-3 Pac-10) on Saturday, January 13 (2 pm, MT/1 pm, PT). The Sun Devils fell to No. 4 California, 194-99, on Friday.
