Stanford vs. Southern California

LOS ANGELES, California, January 28. SAMANTHA Woodward won four events to lead No. 8 Stanford to a 160.5-139.5 women's swimming dual-meet victory over No. 7 USC on Saturday.

Woodward captured the 50-yard freestyle (22.60) and the 100 butterfly (53.57), and was a member of the winning 200 medley and 400 free relay teams.

Stanford (8-1 overall, 4-1 Pac-12) had fewer first-place finishes than USC (5-2, 4-2), by a 9-7 count, but used superior depth to pull out its 12th consecutive victory in the dual-meet series.

The most anticipated matchup of the day was between Stanford's Maya DiRado and USC's Katinka Hosszu. DiRado is the nation's 200 backstroke leader and Hosszu is No. 1 in the 200 and 400 individual medley.

They split their two individual races. DiRado won her specialty in 1:55.83, with Hosszu third.

And in the 200 IM, in which they rank 1-2 in the nation, Hosszu overtook DiRado in the final 50 to win in 1:57.79, to DiRado's 1:57.87.

Woodward led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 50 free, and while Cardinal freshman Maddy Schaefer posted a McDonald's Swim Stadium record in the 100 free (48.54) to lead another Stanford sweep. The Cardinal also swept the top three spots in the 100 back, with Felicia Lee leading the way in 53.27.

Stanford completes its dual-meet season on Feb. 11 at the Avery Aquatic Center against rival Cal, at 1 p.m.
