Stanford Swimming Sweeps Wisconsin

PALO ALTO – The Stanford swimming and diving teams picked up two victories Saturday afternoon as both the men’s and women’s teams downed Wisconsin at Avery Aquatic Center. The Cardinal women came out on top, 145-91, while the men earned a 148-90 victory.

Stanford swept both the 200 medley relays to open the meet, as Janet Hu, Sarah Haase, Nicole Stafford and Simone Manuel won the women’s race in 1:40.10 and David Nolan, Daniel Le, Andrew Liang and Thomas Stephens topped the men’s field in 1:28.36.

Four different Stanford athletes won multiple events today to lead the Cardinal to the sweep — Maddy Schaefer, Sam Perry, Kassidy Cook and Kristian Ipsen. Schaefer got to the wall first in the 200 free (1:48.90) and 100 free (49.15), while Sam Perry swept the 50 free (20.38) and 100 free (44.58). Stanford owned the diving well, sweeping all four of the diving events contested. Kassidy Cook won both the 1-meter (321.15) and 3-meter (315.68), as did teammate Kristian Ipsen (1-meter, 427.65 and 3-meter, 447.68).

Jenny Holtzen had a big day for Wisconsin, picking up two wins in the 1000 free (10:04.30) and 500 free (4:54.09). The Badgers also got wins from Brett Pinfold (200 free, 1:38.31), Ivy Martin (50 free, 22.32), Nicholas Caldwell (500 free, 4:30.43) and Nick Schafer (200 breast, 2:00.54).

Danny Thomson (1000 free, 9:18.16), Ally Howe (200 IM, 2:02.30), Max Williamson (200 IM, 1:47.69), Lindsey Engel (200 fly, 2:01.25), Gray Umbach (200 fly, 1:47.28), Janet Hu (200 back, 1:57.91), David Nolan (200 back, 1:44.32) and Katie Olsen (200 breast, 2:15.59) also won individual events for Stanford.

Stanford’s Maddy Schaefer, Lia Neal, Janet Hu and Simone Manuel wrapped up the meet with the fastest 400 free relay in the country this season at 3:18.08. Texas A&M had held the previous best time, more than two seconds slower at 3:20.40. Wisconsin’s foursome of Cannon Clifton, Brett Pinfold, Nicholas Caldwell and Damon Zito won the men’s race in 3:00.64.
