Stanford Men Soaring at Speedo Cup

LONG BEACH, Ca, November 17. The second-ranked Stanford men's swimming team expanded its lead after second day action on Friday at the UC Irvine/Speedo Cup at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool. Stanford chalked up 1224.5 points compared to Brigham Young and Air Force with 575 points.

The Cardinal picked up victories on Friday in the 100 fly when Jason Dunford tallied a meet record time of 47.76 in the 100 fly. Dunford's time beat the old record of 47.78 by Stanford's Sabir Muhammad in 1997. It was also the second straight year that Dunford has won the 100 fly. The 800 free relay team of Shaun Phillips, Andy Grant, Daniel Beal and Phillip Morrison won the event in a time of 6:30.32. That time was just short of the meet record of 6:30.16 set by Stanford in 2005. It was also the fourth straight year that Stanford has captured the event.

The Speedo Cup concludes Saturday with the finals beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Several Stanford divers are competing at the Hoosier Invitational at the University of Indiana. On Friday, Nathan Kim finished third in three-meter diving with a score of 305.35 points. Dwight Dumais placed sixth (293.35 points)
