Stanford Extends Its Lead Over Cal on Day Two of the Men’s Pac-10s

By Phillip Whitten

LONG BEACH, Calif., March 4. STANFORD dominated competition on the second day, extending its lead at the 2004 Pac-10 Men's Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach, Calif.

The Cardinal amassed 285 points, followed by California (258), Arizona (201), USC (171), ASU (123) and Washington (98).

In the first event of the evening, Cardinal Jayme Cramer led for 498 yards in the 500 yard freestyle, but it was USC's Ous Mellouli, who swam at Cramer's shoulder for almost the entire 20 laps, who uncorked a strong sprint on the final 50. The Tunisian comet finally passed his Bay Area rival on the final stroke to take the victory, 4:14.26 to Cramer's 4:17.32.

Stanford earned its only win of the day when senior Markus Rogan was crowned Pac-10 Champion in the 200 yard IM with a time of 1:45.18. Stanford and Cal each had two finalists as Cardinal Dan Trupin took fourth, touching the wall in 1:47.96, while Cal's Jeff Natalizio (1:45.97) and John Dorr (1:46.40) placed second and third.

The 50 free belonged to Cal, with the Bears taking five of the top eight spots. Duje Draganja led the way with a nation-leading 19.17 seconds, one-hundredth better than Texas's Ian Crocker swam at the Big-12s last weekend.

The 50 was swum with only six swimmers per heat, so the seventh place finisher, Cal's Mike Cavic, who won the B Final, actually had the second-fastest time at 19.49.

ASU's Joona Puhakka, defending NCAA champ, had no trouble winning the one-meter diving, as he scored 381.20 points, 50 more than Arizona's Josh Anderson. ASU, Arizona, USC and Cal each placed two men in the top eight.

The day's final event, the 200 free relay, went to Cal in 1:17.23, with Stanford a close second at 1:17.60. Cal's Draganja had the fastest leadoff time, 19.25, while the second Bear swimmer, Mike Cavic, haad the fastest split, 18.97.

The meet continues Friday and Saturday at Belmont Plaza. Preliminaries begin each day at 11 a.m. and finals begin at 6 p.m.
