St. Thomas Aquinas Sweeps Florida 2A Titles

FORT LAUDERDALE, DEC. 17. ST. THOMAS Aquinas High successfully defended its girls' and boys' Florida state 2A Swimming and Diving Championship at the
International Swimming Hall of Fame Pool on Nov. 17.

On the girls' side, Saint Thomas racked up 352 points to runner-up Fort Myers' 200 and Plant (Tampa's) 145.

On the boys' side, the champs — led by senior Bryan Goldberg's nation-leading 100-200 free wins — won with 405 to Punta Gorda Charlotte's 154 and St. Petersburg Northeast's 139.

Saint Thomas' girls parlayed victory in the three relays (200 medley, 1:50.50; 200 free, 1:38.73; and 400 free, 3:35.00) plus senior Victoria Genova's 100 fly gold in 55.13 for the team title. Genova also scored a third in the 200 IM.

Gainesville junior Ashley Carusone turned in a nice 2:02.82-4:54.59 200 IM-500 free winning effort, and sprinter Rhiannon Jeffrey, a sophomore from Atlantic-Delray, also doubled, winning the 50 free (23.02) and 100 (50.48). In the prelims she was slightly faster (23.01-50.24).

Plant junior Christine Anseeuw won the 200 free (1:51.49); Hudson senior Amanda Paulo won the 100 back (58.03) and Ocala Forest froshwoman Caroline Robertson won the 100 breast (1:05.47).

On the boys' side, Saint Thomas also raced to golds in the three relays, taking the medley in 1:38.24 to Charlotte's 1:40.67; the 200 free in 1:26.29 to Gainesville's 1:29.24; and the 400 free in 3:12.21 to Gainesville's 3:17.86.

Saint Thomas' Goldberg splashed to national No. 1s in the 100 free (45.52) and 200 free (1:37.95) plus anchoring the victorious 200-400 free relays — the latter in 45.57.

Junior teammate Matt Coan (21.23) won the 50 for Saint Thomas' only other individual win.

Leon junior Bill Mrazek tlook home a pair of golds int he 200 IM (1:51.63) and 100 breast (nation-leading 56.08), as did Fort Myers' Brian Shue in the rather disparate 100 fly-500 free pairing (50.99-4:30.47) with 50 free champ Coan second (4:35.38).

The 100 back title went to Charlotte sophoore Zach Cain (53.42).
