Speedo Performance of the Week, Presented by Pace Club: Sept. 17, 2013

PHOENIX, Arizona, September 17. TODAY, we’re not honoring a performance done in the pool, but something that was done far away from the water, and not by someone well-known for swimming.

Last Thursday, Lance Armstrong sent a Tweet announcing that he was returning the bronze medal that he won at the 2000 Sydney Olympics in the time trial cycling event. The medal was the last piece of hardware that Armstrong had from his years of doping, and many had been calling for the medal to be given back after the IOC officially removed Armstrong from results of that race earlier this year.

On Thursday, the medal was in the hands of the US Olympic Committee, who was passing it along to the International Olympic Committee. It’s not clear if the medal will be awarded to the fourth-place finisher in the event, Abraham Olano, but right now, that doesn’t matter. What matters is that Armstrong did the right thing by returning the medal, and for that reason, Lance, you’ve earned our Speedo Performance of the Week.
