Speedo Performance of the Week, Presented by Pace Club: Andrew Kosic Races Strong in Sprint Freestyle

PHOENIX, Arizona, January 7. THE college dual meet season kicked back into gear last weekend, with most teams racing for the first time in several weeks. Most of the times weren’t spectacular, given that most teams were just wrapping up tough holiday training. But one swimmer stepped up and raced despite the fatigue on Friday.

Andrew Kosic showed no fear when he raced Joao de Lucca in the 50 and 100 freestyles in the Louisville-Georgia Tech dual meet, putting up some great in-season times. Kosic tied with de Lucca in the 50 free, with both posting a 20.41. But Kosic was able to win the day with a 20.12 as a leadoff swim for the 200 free relay at the end of the meet. It was two tenths slower than his in-season best of 19.92, suggesting that Kosic is on track toward a lifetime best and a possible NCAA qualification time later this season. As for the 100 free, Kosic couldn’t get the win over de Lucca, placing second with a 44.80, but it was also two tenths slower than his best of the season.

Keep your eye on Kosic the rest of this season. He might be a spoiler for an ACC title or two in February. Congratulations, Andrew, you’ve won our Speedo Performance of the Week!
